Obituary


Verlyn A. Fliss, 75, of Belmond passed away Monday, January 14, 2019 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Everly United Methodist Church, 301 North Ocheyedan Street in Everly with Pastor Mike Eeten officiating. Burial will take place at Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park.

Visitation for Verlyn Fliss will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond and continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Verlyn was born on December 4, 1943 at Spencer Hospital to Floyd and Myrtle (Case) Fliss. He graduated from Arnolds Park High School in 1961. After high school, Verlyn ran Caterpillar for Bob Thorne. During this time Verlyn and his family lived close to his sister Charlotte and her family. This began a strong lifelong bond between the two families. In 1974, Verlyn started working at Eaton Corporation as a machinist. He then transferred to the tool and die department in Spencer. He was laid off and during this time worked for Everco Company in Ottumwa. In 1981, Verlyn moved to Belmond to continue to his career at the new Eaton plant as a tool and die machinist. He made many great friends during this time and mentored a lot of young men in their careers. He retired after over 30 years. Verlyn drove bus for Wright County for a number of years. He enjoyed chatting with his passengers on the route.

In his younger years, Verlyn enjoyed working on cars and drag racing – Mopars of course. He enjoyed repairing various items that were broken. He saw value in everything. Verlyn and his dog,Vinny, were best friends for many years. Other hobbies included collecting wood, tractors and computers. Most important to Verlyn was getting together with family.

Verlyn enjoyed taking trips to the Philippines with Annie and spending time with her family. He was an avid Vikings and Iowa fan, often grumbling about their performance.

Verlyn married Jodell Schwarting. The couple was blessed with two children: Gregg Lee in 1963 and Kerrie Jean in 1965. Later he married Pam (Elphic) Pals and together they raised three boys Tony, Jamie, and Kelly. On September 8, 2007, Verlyn married Anecita (Annie) Lim.

Verlyn is survived by his wife Annie of Belmond; son Gregg (Toni) of Belmond; step-children Greggy (Ruby) Yu of the Philippines and Lovely Lyn (Victor) Lao of Belmond; four grandchildren Jennifer (Mike) Colby of Clear Lake, Grant (Kellie) Fliss of Mount Juliet, TN, Ryan Fliss (Mallory Marshall) of Marion, and Blake Fliss; four step-grandchildren Kami (Travis) Roberts of Alexander, and Kara Wenzel of Ankeny; Elisha Daniella and Zeke Syfer of the Philippines, five great-grandchildren Noan Colby, Hayden Colby, Kylee Colby, Camren Fliss, and Grady Fliss; two sisters Lois Wichmann and Charlotte (Harold) Thorne; and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter Kerrie in 1992. Siblings: Virgil (Lois) Fliss, Muriel (Gail) Allen, Marjorie (Henry) Mertens, and Ralph Wichmann.
