Obituary


Virginia Helen Pratt, 86, of Clarion, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005 at Crestview Manor in Webster City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Virginia Pratt will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, Iowa with Pastor Gary Boen officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation for Virginia Pratt will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 from 5:00 –7:00 PM at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, in Clarion and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Virginia H. Pratt was born on August 8, 1918 in Kellogg Township, Iowa to William and Elsie (Henning) Hasselbrink. She was raised in Newton, Iowa, graduating from Newton High School in 1936.

On August 28, 1940 Virginia was united in marriage to Thomas Pratt in Gallenton, Missouri. The couple moved to Clarion in 1946 where they owned and operated City Cleaners for 20 years. Virginia then focused her attention on raising their children, Karen and Bob. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.

Virginia enjoyed playing bridge, cards with her grandchildren, traveling, painting landscape portraits and knitting. She was a fantastic cook and loved making enough food for large groups of people. Virginia was an unselfish person who was very giving of herself and her talents. Seeing other people smile gave her great joy.

Surviving Virginia are her daughter, Karen Esk and her husband Larry of Roland; son, Robert Pratt and his wife Doris of Bedford, Virginia; 6 grandchildren, Laurie Arnold and her husband Kent of Roland, Tom Esk and his wife Donja of Ames, Julie Emerson and her husband Brent of Huxley, Michael Pratt of Ludington, Michigan, Andrew Pratt and his wife Jamie of Carlisle and Kendra Martin of Bedford, Virginia; 9 great-grandchildren, Payton, Kelli Jo, C.J., Karlee, Jacob, Bethany, Danny, Matt and Jessica; 2 brothers, Richard Hasselbrink of Grinnell and Edward Hasselbrink of Newark, New Jersey; and her sister, Doris Bryan of Lynnville.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, in 1983; 2 brothers, Donald Hasselbrink and Wayne Hasselbrink; and her sister, June Hasselbrink.
