Wayne Schlichting, the son of Glen and Lois (Barkema) Schlichting, was born on February 19, 1944, and grew up on the family farm southeast of Klemme. He attended school through the eighth grade before he was needed at home to help on the farm. It was there that Wayne developed the work ethic and love of farming that would stay with him throughout his life.
Wayne was united in marriage to Linda Walrod on January 30, 1965, at the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage east of Belmond. To this union, four children were born. The couple first made their home southeast of Klemme before moving to Britt, where they built a life together and raised their family on the family farm. For nearly 60 years, the farm was home to Wayne, Linda and their family.
Wayne farmed throughout his life, raising corn, soybeans and hogs. He got out of the hog business in 1999 but continued farming for many years, finally kind of, sort of retiring in 2024 at the ripe old age of 80.
Wayne loved to stay busy and enjoyed his yearly fishing trips, which began in the early 1970s, as well as golfing, camping and card club. But one of his favorite pastimes was country dancing. Wayne and Linda were members of Doc’s Dancers and enjoyed traveling to Tennessee to dance at the Wildhorse Saloon. They also began spending their winters in Arizona, where golfing and dancing became a favorite part of their time away from Iowa.
Following Linda’s passing in 2019, Wayne continued to call the family farm home. In the years that followed, he continued to enjoy many of the things that had always brought him happiness.
In December of 2021, Wayne met Vicki at a pattern dance lesson in Arizona. The two quickly found that they shared many of the same interests and continued to enjoy dancing, golfing and cruising around in their golf cart while wintering in Arizona. When they returned to Iowa for the summers, there was still plenty to keep them busy, including dancing, golfing, fishing trips to Canada and rides in their side-by-side.
Wayne especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Some of his favorite memories were made on side-by-side rides with his children and grandchildren, whether it was a trip to the Black Hills, a local ride to Flipside Pizza or Johnny’s for chicken or simply cruising around the countryside checking the crops.
Wayne is survived by his children Steve (Laura) Schlichting, Tracy Reynolds, Gina (John Katter) Schlichting, and Brad Schlichting; grandchildren Cody, Jessica (Coda), Randi (Chase), Jamie, Kana, Dallas, and Bryken; 6 great-grandchildren Jerzy, Dean, Rayden, Gracelyn, Kamdyn, and Brynleigh; brother Merlin (Kay) Schlichting; brother-in-law Gary Walrod; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Linda, his parents Glen and Lois Schlichting, parents-in-law Charles and Edythe Walrod, son-in-law Darin Reynolds, sister-in-law Donna Walrod and brother Melvin Schlichting.
