Obituary
Alberta L. Stevenson, 101, of Britt passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services for Alberta Stevenson will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at United Methodist Church, 707 4th Street Southwest in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 – 11:30 AM on Tuesday at the church.
Alberta, the daughter of Albert J. and Maud Lawton Clapsaddle, was born April 28, 1915 in LuVerne Township in Kossuth County. She went to country school (starting at age 4 ½) for 4 ½ years and finished at the Britt Public School System. After high school she attended two years of junior college in the same building and graduated with a 92 plus grade point. While attending junior college she worked as secretary for the superintendent in exchange for her tuition.
Alberta was a secretary and bookkeeper at the First State Bank of Britt from May 1934 – March 1945.
Alberta met her future husband Harlan Stevenson when he came to Britt to visit his relatives. His sister, Bernice Swyter, introduced them in 1939. Alberta married Harlan R. Stevenson on November 3, 1941 at the First Methodist Church at Webster, South Dakota.
Alberta was an active member of the United Methodist Church (joined in 1924) and the Women’s Society, serving on many committees as secretary or treasurer. One such committee was the new church building committee. Alberta also enjoyed singing in the choir which she did for approximately 40 years. Alberta was the bookkeeper for Stevenson Feed and Farm Supply for 20 years.
She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star for many years and also served as Worthy Matron.
She enjoyed square dancing, music, reading, gardening and family.
Alberta is survived by son Gary and his wife, Mary Ann of Mounds View, Minnesota; grandchildren: Joshua and Katherine; great-grandchildren: Rosalyn and Benjamin and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Alberta is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harlan in May 2002, two sisters: Harriett Beaman and Marjorie Beaman.
