Obituary
Ardis Nelson, 90, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002, at the Kahl Care Center of Bettendorf, Iowa.
Ardis Lucille Nelson was born February 21, 1912, in Britt, Iowa to Nels Peter Nelson and Dorthea (Rasmussen) Nelson. She was the fourth child in a family of three boys and three girls.
Ardis grew up in Britt, Iowa and graduated from Britt High School in 1931 and the Britt Jr. College in 1934 with a degree to teach school. She later took more teaching courses and graduated from the Mason City Junior College in 1957. She took additional course work from Drake University in Des Moines.
Ardis taught in the surrounding rural schools in Hancock County for 10 years. When the rural schools consolidated with the Britt Community School System she became a member of that faculty and taught third grade until she retired in 1972. That allowed her to help out when one of her great nieces was born in 1974.
She was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Britt. She was a member of the National and Iowa Retired Teachers Association, a forty-eight year member of the Rebekah Circle #334 of Britt and a fifty-five year member of the Eastern Star Chapter #68 of Algona.
Ardis was a gentle soul and was always concerned for the other person. It could be truly said that she never wanted to be a bother to anyone.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Carroll Nelson of Britt, Iowa;brother-in-law, Norman (Jiggs) Rice, and seven nieces and three nephews: Linda Bass of Mountain Ranch, California, Sharon Nehls of Las Vegas, Nevada, Margo Friemel of Bettendorf, Iowa, Alan Rice of Ames, Iowa, Ripple VanEngen of Des Moines, Iowa, Ava Nelson of Palm Harbor, Florida, Lissa Honken of Waukee, Iowa, Rita Fett of Wesley, Iowa, Gary Nelson of Kasson, Minnesota, Mark Nelson of Lynnwood, Washington. She also has thirteen great nieces and nephews, and five great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Edith, Mrs. Norman (Jiggs) Rice, a sister Bertha, Mrs. Vernon J. Nelson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and a brother Vernon, a brother Norman, a brother Raymond all of Britt, a nephew Charles Raymond Nelson, and two sisters-in-law Mrs. Joyce (Raymond) Nelson and Mrs. Mae (Norman) Nelson.
