Charlotte Meta (Deam) Hansen was born on January 31, 1908 to Charles and Meta (Diers) Deam in Hampton, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in the Hampton area. Charlotte graduated from Hampton High School in 1925.

Following her graduation, Charlotte went to the Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for one year. After teaching in a one room school North of Hampton she worked at the ASCS office in Hampton. She was employed there and at the Robinson Abstract Company for eighteen years. When Charlotte was offered the position of Deputy Recorder for Franklin County, she replied that she had received a better offer from Alfred Hansen of Rowan.

In September of 1946, Charlotte married Alfred Hansen in Eldora, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with one daughter, Palma. The couple lived and farmed together on the family farm East of Rowan for many years. After retirement, Charlotte and Alfred traveled across the United States and Europe with the free time they now shared.

Alfred passed away on May 24, 1976, but Charlotte remained on the farm until 1995. Her health forced her to move into the IOOF Home in Mason City where she resided until her recent passing.

Charlotte was a member of Rebecca’s Lodge in Hampton and the United Church of Rowan for several years. She enjoyed the activities at church, loved gardening and was very well known for her pies; especially lemon meringue and custard, the latter of which was eagerly awaited at the Deam family reunions.

Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Palma Plume and husband Larry; two grandsons, Christopher and William Plume all of Evergreen, Colorado; her brother, Dale Deam and sister-in-law Jackie Deam of Banner, Wyoming; four sisters-in-law, Hannah Deam of Sheffield, Delores Shively of Marshalltown, Ellen Skeries of Hampton and Leone Deam of Hampton; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; four sisters, Effie, Lela, Lenora and Frances; and four brothers, Andrew, Orin, Carl and Lester.
