Hugh E. Carter, 72, of Britt passed away Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services for Hugh Carter will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, 70 Fifth Avenue North West in Britt, with Pastor William Rosin officiating. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at First Lutheran Church in Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Hugh Edward Carter was born January 28, 1943, to James and Lucille (Archibald) Carter in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised in Radcliffe, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1961. Following high school, Hugh attended Ellsworth Junior College and Iowa State Teachers College, which had become the University of Northern Iowa by the time he graduated.

Hugh was united in marriage to Nancy Ritland on July 28, 1962, in Garden City, Iowa. To this union, three children were born.

Following Hugh’s graduation from UNI, Hugh taught in the Manly-North Central school district for 10 years. During this time he obtained his Masters in Administration and left North Central to become the elementary principal at HLV in Victor. In 1985 he relocated to Britt, where he held the same position. Hugh retired in 2004, and he and Nancy continued to make Britt their home.

During Hugh’s teaching career, he coached a variety of sports, and helped lead the 1978 North Central boys golf team to qualify for the state tournament. He also served on the A.E.A.’s transition team for the state of Iowa for several years.

Hugh was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Britt. He served on church council, and he and Nancy participated in the Faith Weavers after school youth program for several years. He also served as a confirmation mentor at the church.

Hugh loved golfing, and had hit a hole-in-one on four separate occasions, each at different courses. A strong family man, he also enjoyed attending the various sporting and school events and activities of his grandchildren. He raised his children to have a strong sense of faith, and placed a high emphasis on education.

Hugh and Nancy enjoyed traveling, and in 2008 had an opportunity to visit a former foreign exchange student, Francois (Danielle) Schultz in Switzerland. Francois was hosted by Nancy’s parents many years prior.

Hugh is survived by his wife Nancy of Britt; daughters Monica (Brad) McWilliams of Knoxville, Iowa and Sandra (Christopher) Fisher of Basehor, Kansas; son David (Lisa) Carter of West Des Moines; grandchildren Blake and Bryant McWilliams, Zachary, Nicholas, and Samantha Fisher, and Gabe and Jessica Carter. He is also survived by his brother Gary (Marleen) Carter of Yuma, Arizona; sister Rita (Leonard) Stauffer of Iowa Falls; sister-in-law Lois (Wendell) Frette of Jewell; brothers-in-law Curtis (Linda) Ritland of Tempe, Arizona and Don (Deb) Ritland of Radcliffe, Iowa, and many other extended family members and friends.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Valerie Louise McWilliams, his brother-in law Leslie Ray Ritland, and his parents-in-law Lester and Romaine Ritland.
