Obituary
Thomas Michael Brand, 42, passed away peacefully with his family present October 7, 2023, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Memorial services for Thomas Brand will be held Friday, October 20, 2023 at 2:30 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion. Family and friends are invited to stay after the service for fellowship and light refreshments.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Tom is the son of Bill Brand and Betty Haker, both formerly of Clarion, and their spouses Lana Shope and Frank Haker. Tom was well-known for his love of everything Iowa State, especially Cyclone athletics. He enjoyed fishing, camping in Colorado and northern Minnesota, sports, including the Chicago Cubs and his fantasy football league, music concerts, in particular the Dave Matthews Band, who he saw many times, scary movies, Okoboji family vacations, and spending time with his nieces and nephews. Tom was a longtime mortgage professional with Wells Fargo Corporate Office in West Des Moines.
Tom was born in Wayne, Nebraska, and moved with his parents to Vinton, Iowa, in 1983. He graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg High School and Iowa State University. Tom was proud to be a member of the Vinton-Shellsburg 1998 State Baseball champion team. As a youth he bowled many frames at Berry’s Lanes, with several trophies to show for it, and he loved to play home run derby and explore the creek at Stone Arch Bridge with his friends. Tom spent many happy times as a youth in Clarion, Iowa, at the city parks, swimming pool and on the farm with his grandparents.
In addition to his parents, Tom is survived by his sister Angie Klokowski and her husband Chris and children Kade, Kieran, Fiona, and Lachlan, of Indianola, IA, brother Mike Brand of Des Moines, IA, step sister Natalie Ross, her husband Piyush Ramachandran and their son Rishi of Washington, DC, step sister Meredith Leaton, her husband David and children Lucy and Leo of Norwalk, IA, step brothers Marshall Haker, his wife Kristi and children Gabby in Ohio and Drew and wife Eve in Alaska, Stuart Haker, his wife Rachelle and children Clara of Robins, IA , and Madison of Des Moines, IA, and Clark Haker, his wife Angela and daughter Scarlett of Iowa City, IA.
Tom is also survived by aunts and uncles Phil and Becky Brand of Frankfort, KY, Tom and Kara Brand of Clayton, CA, Beth and Bill Harris of Tacoma, WA, Bob Brand of Ottawa, KS, Don and Lori Wason of Humboldt, IA, Deb and Roger Schaeffer of Viborg, S.D., and cousins Jason, Jenny, Molly, Denise, Kris, Jon, Lisa, Ashley, and Matt.
Tom was preceded in death by his grandparents Dale and Betty Brand and Wilbur and Beverly Wason, and aunt Diane Wason, all of Clarion, and uncles Steven Brand and Michael Brand.
Tom was loved by many and he will be missed beyond measure.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund to support Iowa State University academic scholarships or the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of alcohol abuse.
