Donald O. Shillington

Donald Orvis Shillington, 84, of Hampton, formerly of Clarion, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Rehabilitation Center in Hampton.

Funeral services for Don Shillington will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue North East, in Clarion with Pastor Don Morrison officiating.  Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, in Clarion and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Don was born on June 26, 1928, in Jackson, Minnesota to Orvis and Elma (Stapley) Shillington. He attended Dayton Township country school southwest of Clarion through the eighth grade. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1946, and attended Eagle Grove Community College. Don married Marjorie Damon on February 6, 1955. Together they have three children; Christopher Donald, Thomas Patrick and Sarah Jane. Don and Marge would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this coming February.

Don was a life-long member of the Clarion Methodist Church and the Utili Dulci Sunday School class. He was also a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge.

Don began farming and raising livestock on a farm south of Clarion. Don and Marge made their home on the farm until moving to a condominium in Clarion upon Don’s retirement.

Don had a deep passion for flying and had his private pilot license. He enjoyed playing ping-pong, card games and biking with his children. Don loved to have his grandchildren visit the farm and would spoil all of them. Don was a soft-spoken man and will be remembered for his kind and gentle ways, sense of humor and his ability to remember what year people graduated from Clarion High School.

Don is survived by his wife Marjorie of Hampton; children, Chris (Diana) of Humboldt, Pat (Debbie) of Wendell, NC and Sarah (Gerry) Heilskov of Hampton; grandchildren, Shawn (Becky), Logan, Andrew, Cory and Christine Shillington and Alex and Sawyer Stecher; great-grandchildren, Ben and Will Shillington; sister, Janet (William) Shoenhair of Ames; brother-in-law, Myron (Marilyn) Damon of Mesa, AZ and six nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orvis and Elma and infant nephew, David Shoenhair.
